A DISTURBING EVENT
It is November 1943. War drags on, but in a private country house in Norfolk, the annual meeting of the shareholders of Randolph Jacobs will be held as it has been for over 150 years.

Sir Reginald 'Rex' Jacobs DSO may be in his 60s, but still has a keen eye on the business despite his duties as a sometime advisor to the Inter-Allied Timber Commission and the British government. This will be the first shareholders meeting since Old Harry Randolph's death earlier this year in California. His interests are now being handled by his widow Nella... despite the ongoing intrigue around the lack of a Will.

So on a dark and chilly November evening, with the blackout blinds up, a bickering collection of siblings, children, spouses, executives, investors, staff and shareholders from Britain and the USA will meet to discuss company business, exchange rumours and gossip, and consider the future over an excellent dinner and the possibility of some shooting.
OOC INFORMATION

We would describe this as a 'classic' event, with an emphasis on enjoying playing your character, investigating a mystery (and potentially fighting for your life against mundane and more mystical threats) in a 1940s setting. It is not a 'war' game – the conflict in Europe and the East provides a backdrop rather than a central theme, but you are welcome to play a serving military character. The event is a chance to really lean in to using your character's skills, interact with others, work through family feuds and past scandals, build the story together, have some séance, ritual, puzzle-solving and combat fun, be enjoyably scared, and generally get the most out of your time in 1944. It can be intense and emotional at times, with plenty of house-based combat in the final hours but you have a good chance of ending on a high ;-)

Any Other Business will run from 7pm on Friday to the early hours of Sunday morning and takes place at The Old Rectory, North Tuddenham, Norfolk. Players can arrive on site from Friday afternoon.
​
The event will be fully catered from Friday evening to Sunday brunch, with an option to stay Sunday night. A full menu will be provided closer to the time. The house offers lovely accommodation in a range of double and twin rooms – some quite luxurious and some more simple – with all towels and bedding provided. You can view the venue here.

Disabled access is limited due to the age of the building. There is no lift to the upper floors and the house is surrounded by a gravel drive leading to gardens and private woodland, all of which will be used in game. If you have accessibility requirements of any kind, please talk to us and we will make it work for you.

PLAYING THE GAME
Disturbing Events run a very rules-light system with a focus on enabling the story. Combat includes LRP-safe weapons and cap guns (caps are optional, shouting damage works just as well), but no direct physical contact or grappling. We will help you develop your character card, but your core stats and skills come from a single pot of points with your Strength of Mind, Strength of Body and Strength of Spirit deciding your sanity, hit points and your ability to pick up on the supernatural. Your remaining points will be spent on skills of your choice – which might include combat and gun skills, variants of medicine or psychology, skills relevant to your profession, or any other weird and wonderful things you can think of! Anyone may use a weapon in-game – buying the skill simply increases your damage/accuracy. You cannot regain hit points or your sanity points in-game, and thus death is a very real possibility. Events are planned to ensure no-one dies too early, but should you unfortunately meet your end or become irredeemably insane, you can join the crew and have fun being the other side!

Disturbing Events is a 24-hour Time In system, although we will not enter player bedrooms without permission and we provide a
Time-ish space in the house where you can continue to be in-game while taking a break. ​We use an in-game phrase to indicate that you aren't having fun with a conversation or situation. We play respectfully.
​
Events generally have nearly as many crew as there are players. This means there is always someone close on hand to guide you in the use of your skills, be your background knowledge and intuition and provide as much or as little support as you need in your gameplay.

WHAT NEXT?

If you are interested in a place, please fill in the application form on the link below with your details and your rough idea for a character. If you are unsure what to play or want to talk through your ideas before putting pen to paper, simply request a chat with us and we will help you find something fun.
This is not a first-come, first-served booking system – we will look at all applications and then pick a balanced player party.
If you gain a place, we will speak with you individually to make sure your character idea will sit well in the game, find out what you want from the experience and develop your concept with you to ensure a balanced player party – with good connections to Randolph Jacobs and each other, and a mix of British and American characters.
The Shareholder's Meeting format means you could play almost anyone, as long as they hold at least one share in this very private company. There is no need to play a business expert unless you wish to. You will not be able to play one of the major shareholders – Rex and Nella each control 40% of the company – but even minor shareholders will be receiving an very generous income, so you should not play an impoverished character. Of course you might be living beyond your means, or be in secret financial trouble...
